Welcome to August 10, 2026 presents a monumental golden figure striding above a city of towers and launch vehicles. Its raised arm and forward motion evoke a civic monument, yet the body seems newly activated rather than fixed in commemorative stillness. Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross drew the image from Atelier Missor’s proposal for a fifty-foot statue of Prometheus at Starbase. The work was described as holding high the torch of the West and recalling France’s earlier gift of the Statue of Liberty. The tableau translates that symbolic program into scale. Gold makes the figure radiant against the launch infrastructure, while the rockets connect the ancient bringer of fire to a contemporary project of technological ascent. Prometheus is not placed in a classical landscape. He walks through the systems that his gift has become: engineering, energy, towers and vehicles aimed beyond Earth. The echo of the Statue of Liberty adds a second lineage, turning a proposed artwork into a statement about civilization, alliance and national aspiration rather than corporate decoration alone. At the same time, the figure’s enormous scale invites scrutiny of monument-making in an age defined by rapid technical change. What values are being cast as heroic, and who gets to represent them? The tableau records mythology being built around infrastructure before the infrastructure itself is finished. Before the future becomes history, its participants are already designing the statue through which they hope it will be remembered.
