The FLOPS Must Flow restages the visual language of Dune as computational propaganda. A colossal sand-buried engine or processor rises through an orange storm while a cloaked figure faces it beneath the command-like title. The parody replaces the franchise’s imperative about spice with FLOPS: floating-point operations, the units demanded in enormous quantities by artificial-intelligence training and inference. That substitution is more than a joke. It reframes compute as the strategic resource around which power, infrastructure and ambition are organized. The circular machine resembles both a sandworm and a buried accelerator, fusing mythic creature with industrial hardware. The solitary observer supplies human scale but does not control the scene. Like the desert, the compute system is vast, difficult to master and capable of determining what can be built. Orange dust turns an invisible numerical requirement into atmosphere; the viewer seems to breathe the resource pressure that the slogan names. This is a standalone artwork rather than a dated newsletter tableau, so it works as a compact cultural proposition within Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross’s visual oeuvre. It borrows a familiar epic language to dramatize a contemporary constraint: intelligence may be expressed through software, but its expansion depends on relentless physical computation. As part of the archive of the transition to the Singularity, The FLOPS Must Flow preserves the era’s own self-mythology. Engineers, companies and nations are not merely purchasing chips. They are narrating access to compute as destiny, and the poster gives that belief the scale of a desert religion.
