We Are Going to Need a Bigger Economy reworks the visual grammar of the Jaws poster. Two small figures sit in a boat near the surface while a colossal dark technological presence rises from the water below. The red title converts the famous warning about needing a larger boat into a macroeconomic proposition: the existing vessel is too small for what is approaching. Published as a standalone artwork on June 16, 2026, the piece argues that frontier artificial intelligence, automation, and orbital industry could produce capacities that current economic structures are not prepared to absorb. The submerged form is threatening because its full scale cannot yet be seen. It may represent production, compute, energy demand, or capital formation, but the ambiguity is useful; all of those forces are arriving together. The tiny boat evokes institutions attempting to navigate the change with frameworks built for an earlier sea. By borrowing a familiar movie image, the work makes a difficult economic thesis instantly legible and adds a layer of dark humor. Growth is presented as an opportunity so large that it resembles danger. Unlike a Welcome to dispatch tableau, this work is not tied to one reported event. It serves as a compact manifesto within the archive, capturing the intuition that the Singularity will not fit comfortably inside present measurements, markets, or expectations. The question is not only whether the technology can be built, but whether society can construct an economy large and adaptive enough to meet it at the surface.
