Between dense golden atomic arrays, a probe positions a central molecular structure inside a severe white channel. Repeating forms above and below establish ordered matter, while the suspended prototype appears to be passing through an exquisitely controlled test environment. The image evokes chemistry and chip fabrication at once, but its scale is more exacting: individual structures are being placed with both location and composition under control.
The May 28, 2026 dispatch by Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross reported that CBN Nano Technologies had achieved simultaneous spatial and chemical control over mechanosynthetic carbon fabrication using an inverted-mode scanning tunneling microscope. The result was described as an advance toward atomically precise diamondoid manufacturing. The tableau maps each factual connection. The probe represents the microscope-based manipulation; the ordered golden field represents controlled placement; and the distinct molecular form shows that chemical identity matters alongside position. It does not depict an entire diamondoid factory already in operation.
Manufacturing is approaching the scale at which matter can be programmed atom by atom. Spatial control without chemical control would place the wrong structure precisely; chemical control without spatial control would produce the right material in the wrong arrangement. Achieving both at once is the threshold the image isolates. The microscope result gives the May 28 image its historical weight in the Singularity record, because recursive intelligence ultimately depends on an increasingly precise physical substrate. Here the transition is not shown through a humanoid or a model interface, but through a probe making carbon obey a designed sequence at molecular scale.
