Above Earth’s sunrise floats a massive black structure with solar arrays extended from a ribbed central body. Red light glows within walls that resemble server racks, turning the object into a hybrid of factory, spacecraft, and data center. Its scale distinguishes it from a communications satellite. This facility has claimed orbit as a place where computation itself can live.
The May 8, 2026 dispatch by Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross described Anthropic’s partnership with SpaceX as giving it Colossus 1 and extending into multiple gigawatts of orbital AI compute. The stated pressure was physical: terrestrial land, power, and cooling could not match demand. The tableau binds those facts into one machine. Solar wings address power, the orbital setting leaves land behind, and the server-like body makes clear that the payload is computing capacity rather than ordinary communications equipment.
AI scaling was beginning to push infrastructure past the boundaries of the terrestrial data center. Orbit appears not as symbolic transcendence but as an engineering response to constraints on Earth. The named partnership and gigawatt scale anchor the May 8 image of the Singularity’s industrial body expanding vertically, as thermal management and launch capacity become part of the model story. The sunrise preserves the old perspective of looking down at the planet, but the dark facility reverses the relationship: Earth is now the backdrop to a new computational territory built above it.
