A graceful antelope stands alone beneath a violet, star-filled sky. Across the distant savanna, faint outlines of other animals hover like remembered possibilities. The central creature is sharply present, while the mammoth, dodo, and Tasmanian tiger belong to a spectral catalog of species that may be remembered, reconstructed, or still only pursued.
Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross’s May 1, 2026 dispatch reported that Colossal Biosciences had revealed work to resurrect the bluebuck, an African antelope extinct for roughly two centuries. The program joined the company’s work involving the mammoth, dodo, and Tasmanian tiger. The tableau gives the bluebuck the solid center because it was the newly named subject, while the other de-extinction programs remain outlines across the landscape. It does not claim that any depicted extinct animal had already been restored to the wild.
Extinction was being reorganized from an irreversible category into a biotechnology portfolio. A species lost for about two hundred years could be placed beside several other restoration targets as an active program of research. Through the bluebuck program, the May 1 report locates the Singularity’s approach in biology as well as computation. The work records the moment a vanished animal reentered public time first as a project, before it could reenter an ecosystem. Its quietness is important: the bluebuck is not shown as a triumphal product, but as a living center surrounded by the uncertainty of everything still absent.
