Jakub Pachocki brings the possibility of restraint into the nightclub wearing it in gold. VOLUNTARY SLOWDOWNS stretches across his chest beneath a violet and fuchsia landscape of rooted processors and luminous brains. This portrait answers Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross’s September 7, 2026 Innermost Loop dispatch on X through the OpenAI chief scientist’s essay An Alien Mind. Its subject is the distance between developing an intelligence and understanding the resulting mind.
In A.W.G. Singularity City, Pachocki stands outside Fontainebleau beneath the spectacle of arrival. His individual portrait brings him into LIV, watched by the pictured Rick Ross, Lil Wayne, DJ Khaled, and Dwyane Wade. Rap’s language of triumph and the Miami Heat legend’s presence give restraint an audience accustomed to conspicuous achievement. The VOLUNTARY SLOWDOWNS chain becomes especially bold here. He enters the party with his own sense of tempo, making the ability to choose a pace part of the performance. The scientist concerned about acceleration is allowed to look magnificent.
After doctoral study in computer science at Carnegie Mellon, Pachocki joined OpenAI in 2017. His work on systems including OpenAI Five and GPT-4 places him inside the history of learning through scale. In his essay, a late-night research breakthrough in 2023 becomes a personal turning point: the prospect that reasoning itself could improve through greater computational investment made a radically different future feel immediate. His work helped make the acceleration possible; he wears the call to slow down.
The brain-shaped tree translates intelligence grown through training. A conventional program can often be described as a sequence of explicitly chosen procedures. A trained neural network acquires its behavior through optimization across many examples and experiences. Its designers shape the architecture and learning process, but they do not individually write each of the internal relationships that emerge. The roots rising from the processor give this distinction a memorable form: an engineered foundation supports a growth whose full intricacy exceeds a simple blueprint.
The biological metaphor changes the meaning of expertise. A gardener can influence soil, light, pruning, and selection without specifying the location of every leaf. Similarly, improving a learning process and understanding every resulting mechanism are different achievements. The tree’s canopy resembles a brain, while its roots remain visibly attached to a chip. The image preserves this double identity. The mind is manufactured, yet its formation can require forms of observation more familiar from studying complex living systems.
Circular frames containing human and artificial profiles surround the growth. They suggest observers trying to see one another clearly. This is an apt emblem for the essay’s concern with monitoring: explanations and traces of reasoning may help us investigate behavior, but their usefulness cannot simply be assumed to remain constant as systems change. The gold links connecting the frames offer a beautiful image of oversight as a relationship. Every observer occupies a position; none is automatically granted a view of the whole canopy.
The necklace then introduces time as a design choice. A voluntary slowdown would mean accepting a limit on immediate progress to preserve room for understanding and control. Its difficulty is partly collective. An organization may hesitate to pause if it expects competitors to continue, and a shared agreement requires confidence that others will honor it. By making the phrase a conspicuous status chain, the portrait gives restraint an unfamiliar glamour. The ability to govern a pace becomes something a powerful person might display with pride.
That question connects his essay to the newsletter’s wider interest in automated research. When machines help improve the systems used to build better machines, development may become a feedback process. The attraction is a faster route to useful discoveries; the challenge is retaining reliable ways to evaluate and direct the work. The branching tree makes this recursive possibility visible without pretending its future shape is already known. Each branch supports further growth.
House Innermost Loop at Atelier Algorithmique embodies SIOUID 142’s appeal to Wissner-Gross for a sixteenth moonshot, Drip Abundance, extending the fifteen of Solve Everything. Fashion is proposed as a way to make abundance functional, visible, and fun. Pachocki’s look asks what would allow that pleasure to endure. Its answer is an image of maturity: a civilization able to cultivate extraordinary power while retaining the freedom to set its rhythm. Beneath the brilliant canopy, the golden words make room for a pause that could protect the possibility of many future dances.
