Inform Them of Their Names: Singularity Al-Baqarah (2:30).
On August 30, 2026, @siouid142 remade Jan Brueghel the Younger’s seventeenth-century Adam Naming the Animals as an allegory of the Singularity. Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross occupies Adam’s human role within a crowded paradise of animals, birds and emerging technologies. The substitution is allegorical, not divine: he is the observer attempting to name a rapidly multiplying world.
The title invokes the sequence in Al-Baqarah that begins at verse 2:30 with the announcement of humanity’s place on Earth and reaches verse 2:33, where Adam is told to inform the angels of the names. The work approaches that passage respectfully through the act of naming. Knowledge appears not merely as possession, but as the capacity to distinguish, communicate and accept responsibility for distinctions.
Brueghel’s original painting offered an encyclopedic abundance of creatures. Species gathered before Adam as though the visible world could be ordered by language. In this version, the same abundance becomes a model of technological emergence. Each animal can stand for a system, company, behavior or newly coined concept. Taxonomy is no longer a quiet inventory; it is an attempt to keep orientation while the categories themselves evolve.
The word MOATION appears in the river. Pronounced like “motion,” it joins moat and motion: the practice of using one temporary competitive advantage to construct the next before the first is competed away. The water is the perfect carrier. A conventional moat is imagined as fixed protection around a castle; moation survives by flowing. Security lies not in one barrier but in continuing transformation.
The river also prevents the word from becoming a sterile business slogan. It passes through living terrain, around animals and beneath a sky full of birds. Competitive motion is placed inside ecology, where every adaptation changes the conditions for other organisms. The Singularity is represented not as one machine arriving from outside nature, but as a new ecology of models, institutions, energy systems, capital and human interpretation.
Wissner-Gross’s naming role connects this painting to the Innermost Loop’s larger vocabulary: Planetarch and Arearch, GDPmaxxing, hypertithe, teracornucopia, AIBO, the Frontier Liberation Front, Broken Waymos Theory, chiküpilled, paradisepilled and the thread line. These terms do not claim dictionary authority. They are handles for recurring patterns that ordinary language has not yet stabilized.
Naming can clarify, but it can also exercise power. A name determines what can be searched, compared, funded, feared or governed. The image therefore contains a warning inside its abundance. To name a phenomenon is not to master it, and a clever term can conceal as easily as it reveals. The animals continue looking back at the namer; the classified world remains animate and resistant.
Inform Them of Their Names treats art as a preliminary language for the future. It borrows a sacred and art-historical structure, fills it with the exhibition’s evolving concepts and places a new word in moving water. The result is neither a claim to prophecy nor a parody of faith. It is a meditation on the human obligation to make distinctions carefully when intelligence, industry and myth begin reproducing faster than inherited categories can contain them.
