She Talks to Birds - House Innermost Loop.
On July 5, 2026, @siouid142 turned Dr. Alex Wissner-Gross’s Innermost Loop into a five-person House Innermost Loop runway. The title belongs to Dr. Julie Elie, whose work made the old fantasy phrase “she talks to birds” newly literal. Yet the full image also dresses Jürgen Schmidhuber, Andy Coenen, Sam Zeloof and Simon Willison in the day’s arguments about self-modeling minds, long-horizon agents, distributed chip fabrication and machine judgment.
Elie stands at far left beneath THEUNISSEN LAB. Her pale coat carries zebra finches, waveform-like marks, behavioral notation and the words DECODING VOICE, UNDERSTANDING NATURE. The birds extend down the long train as though a field notebook had become couture. She and UC Berkeley’s Theunissen Lab won the Coller-Dolittle Prize for an AI-assisted dictionary mapping eleven zebra-finch calls to distinct meanings.
The garment’s ceremonial cut matters. The breakthrough is not presented as a spectrogram or a novelty translation app. Elie becomes the human interface to another social network, one built from calls, contexts and behavior across species. For centuries, speaking with birds belonged to saints, shamans and fairy tales. The coat records the cultural inversion by giving reproducible computational research the visual dignity once reserved for magic.
Next to her, Andy Coenen walks beneath the DeepMind mark in a silver-blue coat covered with network diagrams, planning traces and long-horizon language. His place comes from his account of Fable’s capability: sheer scale, relentless agentic reinforcement learning and a constitution able to convert thousands of decisions into a legible compass. The coat’s flowing geometry makes orchestration visible as a surface that continues beyond one prompt.
At center, Sam Zeloof stands beneath Fab2. His layered white and black ensemble carries code, fabrication diagrams and place names: Austin chip fab, Lockhart fab fab and San Francisco garage. Those labels refer to his renaming of Atomic Semi as Fab2, a distributed “fab fab” connected through browser-based electronic-design tools. The garment treats semiconductor manufacturing as a networked workshop rather than a single sealed campus.
Simon Willison appears beneath Datasette in a violet-gray suit patterned with interface grids and the words JUDGEMENT OVER RULES, TOKENS ARE FINITE and CONSERVE TOKENS BEFORE THE PRICE HIKE. The inscriptions summarize his argument that Fable performs better when allowed to exercise judgment rather than being trapped inside excessive instructions. His tailored layers turn prompt design into an ethics of restraint: spend fewer tokens and leave room for agency.
At far right, Jürgen Schmidhuber stands beneath nnaisense in an icy coat threaded with neural constellations. The dispatch opened with his claim that the model itself is the one constant across training and rollout, so an intelligent system should learn to model itself in order to predict its next token. His mirrored, recursive surface makes self-reference the final garment in the line.
Together the five figures create a progression. Elie decodes another species; Coenen explains how a frontier model sustains action; Zeloof builds the substrate; Willison calibrates the relationship between instruction and judgment; Schmidhuber turns intelligence back upon itself. The runway moves from translation across minds to the recursive modeling of mind by mind.
The July 5 dispatch ranged far beyond these five people—superconductors, Mechanical Turk’s closure, national chip investments, robotic dogs, orbital satellites, Alzheimer’s trials and recovered historical identities. The image does not attempt to wear every headline. It selects figures whose stories can be translated into distinct systems of cloth while retaining a common argument about who or what is allowed to understand.
House Innermost Loop’s violet city and crescent remain behind the figures, and WELCOME TO JULY 5, 2026 runs across the floor. Institutional names appear high above them, but the garments carry the actual analysis. The fashion-house device gives abstract architectures a body, showing that models, laboratories and interfaces are not disembodied concepts; they are built, interpreted and socially presented by identifiable people.
As contemporary history painting, She Talks to Birds - House Innermost Loop makes communication the hidden theme of an industrial day. Finches communicate calls, models communicate internal judgment, browser tools communicate chip designs across locations, and a self-model communicates its own state to itself. Elie receives the title because her achievement makes the expansion of the conversation unmistakable. The runway’s deepest promise is not that machines will replace speech. It is that computation may enlarge the set of beings, systems and inner states that can finally be heard.
